Origins of Care and Cooperation (funded by the CNRS, 2017-2018) : Cooperation in a competitive world is a conundrum. Natural selection opposes the evolution of cooperation unless specific mechanisms are at work. Cooperation with physically disabled individuals is even more of a puzzle since helping behaviors impose a cost on the helper with virtually no benefits from direct reciprocity. Indirect reciprocity is often advanced as one possible explanation. However, there is evidence from paleoanthropology that helping behaviors is a common phenomenon in small-scale societies as well as in larger groups where indirect reciprocity may be less of a driver. In this project, we use laboratory experiments to investigate helping behaviors in groups with physically disabled individuals when there are no benefits from indirect reciprocity.
EPHEMER (funded by the ANR, 2017-2020) : In this project, we use laboratory and large-scale classroom experiments on BYOD in order to make students from different disciplines reflect on the ethical dimension of their everyday behavior. We are also developing online games that can be used in the classroom to teach students about emphathy and cooperation. A related project is the School Trotters (https://www.schooltrotters.com/ ).
